Freshness locked & delivered.

Reading time ~4 minutes

Packaging fruits and vegetables are one of the most important steps in the long and complicated journey from grower to the consumer. More than 1500 different types of packages are used for the produce and the number continues to increase as the industry introduces new packaging materials and concepts. The main function of packaging is to assemble the produce convenient units for handling. A properly designed produce container should contain, protect, and identify the produce, satisfying everyone from the farmer to the consumer. Proper packaging can prolong the storage life of fresh fruits and vegetables by preventing moisture loss and thereby wilting. The rate of moisture loss varies with the product and water vapor permeability of the packaging film.

Microorganisms like yeasts and bacteria can cause destruction by growing on the exterior of the product or they may invade the interior through a surface bruise or cut and cause an internal decay. Therefore careful handling and packaging are very important in the preservation of freshness and quality. Normal ripening of fruits and vegetables causes alterations in colour, texture, odour, and flavour. At some point, for each type, ideal ripeness is achieved. Beyond that point, the product becomes overripe and quality deteriorates.

While processing, the key objectives are to preserve colour, taste, texture, and nutrition while at the same time prolonging the storage life of perishable fruits and vegetables.

The primary goal is to deliver the product to the consumer at such a point in the ripening scale, that it will achieve perfect ripeness while the time of eating.

The packaging that we use is:

1. Brown paper packaging:

Soft vegetables are packaged in brown paper bags so that the produce is kept dry by absorbing the moisture. They ‘re both recyclable and biodegradable. Paper bags are made from renewable resources, can be reused repeatedly, and can be shipped to a paper mill and re-made into new paper. Actually, it requires only little energy for paper bags to be recycled than it would for plastic bags.
